Kelmscott Manor, the summer residence of William Morris

Project Background

These illustrated historical objects are part of a fascinating exhibition in the Brewhouse at Kelmscott Manor, where I was commissioned as part of their Heritage Fund Project to create a series of bespoke illustrations. Kelmscott Manor, famously the summer home of William Morris, is steeped in history, and it has been a privilege to contribute to this project.

The illustrations of the historical objects explore three essential activities that were central to daily life at the manor: brewing, laundry, and baking. Each one brings these traditional crafts to life, offering visitors a glimpse into the hard work of the past. From the art of baking bread to the careful process of brewing beer, and the sheer effort involved in washing linens, these depictions highlight the skills that sustained life in the 19th century.

The photographs shared here were taken in the Brewhouse, a key part of Kelmscott Manor’s heritage. These illustrations aren’t merely decorative; they form part of an interactive game designed to engage children. By encouraging young visitors to learn through play, the project makes history accessible and fun for all ages.

One of the most charming features is an illustration of a young William Morris brewing his own beer. This piece encapsulates the curiosity and craftsmanship that would go on to define Morris’s life and work.

It has been a joy to bring these stories to life through illustration, connecting modern audiences with the heritage of one of Britain’s most iconic historic houses. If you’ve not yet visited Kelmscott Manor, it’s well worth a trip to explore its rich history and see how the past has been reimagined.
