Arts at the Old Fire Station, Oxford

Project Background

Brand illustrations for arts centre started out with the brief to create and design a fully illustrated window vinyl that reflects what’s going on in the OFS building. “We want something eye-catching and really bright!”

This project started with a window vinyl illustration. The Old Fire Station in Oxford houses two charities: Crises, an organisation to help people out of homelessness, and The Arts at the Old Fire Station that provides a space for artistic activity for those who want to participate.

The Old Fire Station is a lot of things in one building. Arts at the Old Fire Station, an arts centre, cohabits with Crisis Skylight Oxford, offering services to people experiencing homelessness. The two charities live under the same roof, and share the same front door. The window display was aimed to communicate the two charities together.

There is a theatre, a dance studio, a bar, an art gallery and a café. People can come here for support to progress out of homelessness, to see performances, to make art, to do dance classes, to meet friends for a coffee or lunch – all referenced in the illustration.

The first part of the project was the window vinyl illustration, which then was re-licenced to be used in a sign and an A5 flyer. The leaflet is placed in the Old Fire Station, and is given out by staff to members of the public. It is aimed at people who visit the building but are not aware of what really goes on inside it. It must explain the relationship between the two charities in a way that is clear and easy to understand.

This project is a great example of how an illustration can be re-purposed to extend a strong brand, add a human touch to it and make it more relatable.
